    • How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture operates on the belief that stimulating specific points in the body triggers responses in the central nervous system. This stimulation leads to the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. The resulting biochemical changes are thought to activate the body’s inherent healing mechanisms, fostering both physical and emotional well-being. The holistic nature of acupuncture aims to promote overall health.

    • Does acupuncture hurt?

My approach to acupuncture is gentle, so hopefully your treatment is a comfortable experience. Sometimes you may feel a small momentary sting as the acupuncture needles are inserted which usually resolves within a few seconds. Generally, acupuncture is very well tolerated.

After an acupuncture session, a few patients might experience mild side effects, such as a light headache or minor bruising. These effects are temporary and are considered a normal part of the body’s response to the treatment.

    • How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

Treatment plans vary for each individual as we are all unique and present with different concerns. Individual responses to treatment can also vary significantly.

Several factors come into play, such as the severity and duration of the condition, as well as your dedication to implementing diet and other lifestyle changes.

Following your initial assessment, we will discuss a customised treatment plan based on your specific circumstances. This ensures a tailored approach to address your unique needs and goals.

My primary goal is to address your health concerns as efficiently as possible. Overservicing is unethical and underservicing will not produce the desired outcomes. My aim is to strike a balance that ensures optimal results in the shortest number of treatments.

    • Do I need to bring anything to my first appointment?

If you possess any relevant test results, such as bloods or ultrasounds pertaining to your visit, please bring them along. However, if you don’t have them on hand, we can discuss what would be beneficial to obtain during your initial appointment.

You can also bring your private health insurance card, as I can process your claim at the time of your appointment. If you forget, I will email you a receipt, allowing you to process the claim with your health fund later on.

    • What should I wear to my first appointment?

You can wear anything you like to your acupuncture appointments. You may have to remove clothing if I need to access a particular area of your body but I have ample towels to cover you for modesty and comfort.

If you would prefer not to remove clothing it is advisable to wear loose and comfortable clothing, preferably separates for easy access to your abdomen during the session.

    • What will happen during my first appointment?

Your initial visit will encompass a thorough consultation, followed by an acupuncture treatment. We will discuss your primary treatment focus (e.g., fertility, menopause etc) and various aspects of your health such as sleep, menstrual cycle, appetite, digestion, energy, and emotions. This information is crucial to understand your Chinese medicine pattern and tailor your treatment accordingly.

While no medical documentation or lab results are required I can review any information you wish to bring in, such as blood results, your IVF plan, or semen analysis.

Once we have covered everything you will receive your treatment. Typically this involves lying on a massage table and I will insert the needles. You may also receive cupping, electroacupuncture, moxibustion and heat lamps as part of your treatment but this will be discussed with you beforehand. Once the needles are in you are left to lie there for 20-30 minutes to relax and listen to the music. Many clients fall asleep during this time but I will give you a buzzer or bell so if you need me during the appointment you can call me. You may also bring a support person with you if you would be more comfortable.

I will then remove the needles and we will discuss your future treatment plan.

    • How much does it cost?

I have different pricing in the 2 clinic I practice in. Please click here for the details.

    • What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Both dry needling and acupuncture involve the insertion of needles into specific points in the body, but there are significant differences between the two.

Registered acupuncturists have completed a four year university degree and are registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA) under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). However, dry needling can be performed by a variety of modalities, including massage therapists, beauty therapist, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and osteopaths. Whilst it can be effective at addressing musculoskeletal concerns when perform by a skilled clinician it is not regulated in Australia This makes it challenging to determine the qualifications, safety, and effectiveness of a practitioner.

Acupuncture takes a holistic approach by aiming to balance the body, mind, and spirit, whereas dry needling focuses on the affected physical area. Dry needling is often characterised by deep needling and may elicit strong sensations, whereas acupuncture is typically a more comfortable experience.

    • Is acupuncture covered by private health?

Yes, acupuncture is covered by private health insurance when received from a registered practitioner. The level of coverage will be dependent on your level of insurance.

I am registered with all eligible Australian private health funds. Your fund will be able to tell you how much rebate you will receive. The codes are 103 for an initial session and 203 for return sessions.

    • Can I bring a support person with me to my appointment?

Yes, you can bring someone along with you to an appointment. Whilst I usually encourage my clients to lie quietly with music or a meditation I realise that sometimes clients don’t want to be alone with their thoughts. All my rooms have chairs for your support person to sit comfortable whilst you have your treatment.

    • Can I have acupuncture whilst I am also receiving Western medical care, such as fertility or oncology treatments?

Yes, acupuncture will not adversely interfere with Western medical treatments, such as IVF or oncology treatments. If you are unsure check with your medical team.
